Brian Vernellis, of the Shreveport Times, reports Stanford LB Jon Alston said the Minnesota Vikings are showing an interest in him. Alston had the fastest time in the 40 among the linebackers at the NFL Combine. He has generated a lot of buzz among scouts and general managers.

The Associated Press reports the Minnesota Vikings issued the following statement about the release of RB Onterrio Smith Wednesday, April 26: "We've decided to terminate Onterrio Smith's contract ahead of this weekend's college draft," head coach Brad Childress said in the statement. "We wish him well in his future endeavors." spokesman Greg Aiello said Smith's one-year suspension doesn't expire until June 7.

Kevin Seifert, of the Star Tribune, reports the Minnesota Vikings will be pursuing a young quarterback this weekend whether via the NFL Draft or a trade. "Regardless of who is starting," head coach Brad Childress said, "we want to take a developmental guy. We want to develop a guy. I think it behooves you to have your eye on a guy that's got the skill set that you're looking for and try to get that guy up to speed. A guy that you're serious about bring along within the system." The team may still try to trade for Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Schaub. Schaub would challenge QB Brad Johnson for the starting job, but a draft pick would open the season on the bench. There has been recent speculation that Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler could be available when the Vikings' No. 17 overall pick arrives, but there is also talk the team will pursue a second-tier rookie quarterback

Kevin Seifert, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings S Willie Offord, who was arrested April 18 for drunken driving, waived a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday, April 26, and will have a pretrial hearing May 3. His trial date is set for June 7. He faces two counts of fourth-degree driving under the influence of alcohol, both misdemeanors

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports according to a source close to Minnesota Vikings RB Onterrio Smith, the Vikings running back will not be reinstated by the NFL next month. Smith was suspended by the NFL last June. The Vikings and the NFL declined comment. "That falls under the confidentiality provisions of the program," league spokesman Greg Aiello said. "His status is unchanged in that he continues to be under suspension." The Vikings weren't counting on Smith, but owner Zygi Wilf said earlier this month that the team was open to giving the running back a chance to return. The Vikings could address the position in this weekend's NFL Draft

The Associated Press reports the Minnesota Vikings have hired turf guru George Toma to fix their practice fields. He will work as a consultant at the team's Winter Park practice facility. Winter Park has one indoor field with artificial turf and two fields outdoors with natural grass, which have taken a beating over the years from the harsh Minnesota winters and wet springs. Considered the foremost expert on groundskeeping, Toma has been the NFL's turf consultant for every Super Bowl and was honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001 with the Daniel F. Reeves Pioneer Award, an award that had only been given four times in nearly 30 years
