Houston Texans |
RB |
Reggie Bush |
|
Come on - All these negotiations with other draftees is pure smoke and mirrors. Bush is one of the best plain football prospects to come out of college in years. If the Texans are misguided enough to take Williams, the Titans will have a case of champaign shipped right over to Relient Stadium.
|
2 |
New Orleans Saints |
OT |
D'Brickashaw Ferguson |
|
This easily can be Mario Williams, but with a new QB coming off injury, the combo of Ferguson and Jamaal Brown as book-ends for that line will work very well for a long time.
|
3 |
Tennessee Titans |
QB |
Matt Leinart |
|
Interestingly, there seems to be slight decension in the ranks down in Memphis - the FO guys are pretty enthralled with Vince Young and I can see why. Like Vick - Young will put butts in the seats for many years and it would be an added bonus to take the hometown guy from the City that let you go. But cooler football minds will prevail and they take the guy that can win them games.
|
4 |
New York Jets |
DE |
Mario Williams |
|
If he's here this is a no-brainer. The Jets front seven won't miss a step by plugging Williams in after losing John Abraham.
|
5 |
Green Bay Packers |
OLB |
A.J. Hawk |
|
Its hard hard to figure out what GB wants to do - if anything - but this is a pick they won't have to think about since they aren't doing a lot of thinking this off-season anyway. Hawk by default - they're just lucky that he'll look great next to Nick Barnett.
|
6 |
San Francisco 49er's |
S/CB |
Michael Huff |
|
There are a couple of very attractive options for the Niners sitting here. Vernon Davis would be incredible for the new QB Alex Smith to build a career on. You also have to wonder what they see trading for another 1st round selection. There could be a package deal somewhere in the works, but with the versatility the Huff brings to the table and losing Peterson to the Seahawks, I think this is the way they go.
|
7 |
Oakland Raiders |
DT |
Haloti Ngata |
|
True enough - it is Al Davis and anything is possible, but signing Aaron Brooks, who's not that old, and having a bunch of holes on D, Ngata should put some bite in the Raiders D-Line that hasn't been there in awhile. You only need to look at the running games of the teams in their division to see this is the right pick.
|
8 |
Buffalo Bills |
DT |
Broderick Bunkley |
|
Buffalo has had quite a few defections from what was a pretty damn good defense a couple of years ago. This pick will surely help that side of the ball for them.
|
9 |
Denver Broncos |
TE |
Vernon Davis |
|
Shannahan has been asking everybody to trade up with him, and will finally find a dance partner in the Lions (who've had way too many high first round choices the last few years). The Broncos will find their heir apparent to Shannon Sharpe and the Lions get some wiggle room financially.
|
10 |
Arizona Cardinals |
OT |
Winston Justice |
|
All the talk is that the Cards take a QB - but Denny isn't an idiot - he knows that he has to keep Kurt Warner on his feet to keep all of those real good receivers happy. Also they were dead last in rushing last year. Justice will be Denny's guy, besides he's an offensive player, Denny only ignores defense.
|
11 |
St. Louis Rams |
QB |
Vince Young |
|
Quarterbacks are Scott Linehans specialty and he's going to want to move boldly into the future with his own guy, not someone with too much Mike Martz in him.
|
12 |
Cleveland Browns |
OLB |
Ernie Sims |
|
Romeo Crennel learned that he has to have a strong, versatile defense under Bill Belichick this guy will be a big boost to an average linebacker corps.
|
13 |
Baltimore Ravens |
CB |
Jonathan Joseph |
|
The Ravens have made their mark on defense, but age and defections showed last year they are taking it's toll. They will pick another DB later on in the draft as well, but Joseph is a good start for them here.
|
14 |
Philadelphia Eagles |
WR |
Chad Jackson |
|
Even taking the loss of T.O. out of the equation, this team has one of the weaker receiving corps in the league, and since Andy Reid only wants to throw the ball, a solid receiver with deep threat ability is the only thing they can pick.
|
|
Detroit Lions |
CB |
Tye Hill |
|
Armed with a few extra selections from Denver, they don't have to hit a home run with the first pick. That will help them relax and make a selection the will shine for them. You know it's going to be defense, not only because it's need, but Matt Millen has to be pretty gun-shy about first round offense at this point as well.
|
16 |
Miami Dolphins |
WR |
Santonio Holmes |
|
The fish are sitting with enough needs that they can pick the best available player - which would be Jay Cutler at this point - but considering that traded to their franchise QB in Culpepper - they take Holmes to help out the veteran signal caller.
|
17 |
Minnesota Vikings |
QB |
Jay Cutler |
|
Draft Day will be interesting for the Vikings and this is a possible scenario of Cutler falling this far, but it's also just as possible he could be top five. If he is available - this IS the pick the Vikings make. If he is off the board it's a fifty/fifty shot that they either trade up to get him or they hand this pick to Atlanta for Matt Schaub.
|
18 |
Dallas Cowboys |
S |
Donte Whitner |
|
A lot has been made that the Cowboys don't historically trade around in the draft, but that's really not accurate. They will move and Jerry Jones is a wheeler dealer - they very much covet Michael Huff - they just aren't able to work anything out to get up that high. They'll be happy with Whitner as a second option, just not exstatic.
|
19 |
San Diego Chargers |
WR |
Sinorice Moss |
|
As much as they'd love for Jackson to fall to them, they will not have any problem with taking Moss here and they realize he can fill a couple of needs for them with is return ability as well.
|
20 |
Kansas City Chiefs |
CB |
Antonio Cromartie |
|
If one of the top 3 receivers are avilable that could be the direction here, but KC won't reach of wrangle to get one (they've never had problems with offense with avarage wideouts anyway) and they will do what they can to shore up a porus secondary.
|
21 |
New England Patriots |
RB |
LenDale White |
|
Bill Belicheck is definitely one not to buy into hype and he sees two things here. First, Cory Dillon is at the point where he can start substantially dropping off his production. Second, although the talking heads are suddenly writing White off as a problem without work ethic, Bill will see nothing but game tape and consistant, solid yardage from the record holder from USC.
|
22 |
San Francisco 49er's |
OLB |
Chad Greenway |
|
I don't understand how Greenway isn't ranked any higher and how he falls here, but SF doesn't mind at all. Chad in my opinion is more fluid with great change of direction ability than any of the other LB's and he's definitely a gift for the 49er's.
|
23 |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers |
DE |
Mathias Kiwanuka |
|
Gruden may not want to admit it, but he knows that Simeon Rice needs some help and a few more breathers at this point in his career. Mathias will supply both.
|
24 |
Cincinnati Bengals |
OC |
Nick Mangold |
|
Your franchise QB is coming off a knee injury, you need better protection out of the O-Line, and your starting center is 35, what do you do. You take a stud kid from college who can play more than one position and would go much higher in other draft years. Too easy, let's move on.
|
25 |
New York Giants |
DE/LB |
Kamerion Wimbly |
|
Wimbly is a tweener who the Giants can have standing up or with his hand down. He's a tough kid that can groom behind a later career Strahan. All of that will be great with Coughlin, but most importantly, wimbly has never been late for a meeting.
|
26 |
Chicago Bears |
TE |
Marcedes Lewis |
|
Bears fans and personnel guys alike were hoping that Vernon Davis would be a great grab here, but there isn't even a remote chance of that happening. They still want a little extra protection for Grossman as well as a nice underneath relief option.
|
27 |
Carolona Panthers |
RB |
Laurence Maroney |
|
Although DeShaun Foster has picked up his game, I don't think the Panthers are sold on him as a true feature back, and Stephan Davis is truly on the backside of his career.
|
28 |
Jacksonville Jaguars |
DE/LB |
Manny Lawson |
|
Again a pick for best available, and Manny Lawson can deliver production from a variety of locations on the field. Tough Guy Jack Del Rio will also be attracted to the way this guy can hit.
|
29 |
New York Jets |
RB |
Deangelo Williams |
|
I'm truly beginning to wonder if I will see the end of Curtis Martin's or Brett Favre's careers in my lifetime, but the Jets will take out a little extra insurance, just in case.
|
30 |
Indianapolis Colts |
RB |
Joseph Addai |
|
He's not the EDGE, but he is quick and wiley and will be great addition to that running back corps. And he does have potential with the right coaching.
|
31 |
Seattle Seahawks |
OG |
Davin Joseph |
|
You don't lose Steve Hutchinson without taking a step back. To keep Hasselback slinging the ball and Alexander running to the left, they take Joseph here. This can't surprise you - it's protecting an investment - remember they dropped Fort Knox on Alexander in the off-season.
|
32 |
Pittsburgh Steelers |
S |
Jason Allen |
|
Obviously you can't knock the Steelers defense, but if there is a point of exploitation it's in thier secondary and they address it here.
